What is Autumn?

You may have already noticed the purdy little “Art You Eat” banner on my side menu bar but just in case… go take a peek and then come back.

::waiting patiently::

Is that a pear? I think its a pear right? No matter. Its still lovely on my side menu bar. Don’t you agree?

My newest banner promotes Art You Eat Hello Captain Obvious! which is the brain child of fellow TWD baker, Holly of Phe/mom/enon. I was so flattered when she invited me to participate but after I heard the theme as “August” I admit I got a little scurred.

Let me break it down for you.

I live in CA. I wear flip flops year ’round. My everyday any day outfit of choice is tank top with jeans (sometimes I’ll switch it up with capris, sweats or PJ pants though). Our season consists of Summer, Spring and slightly-chilly-what-are-long-johns?-more-like-fall Winters. Get me?

So I need some autumnal cupcake inspiration. Help?

When you think of Autumn… what comes to your mind?

After reading all the comments, it looks like I need to create a cinnamon, chai, apple cider, black velvet, clove, nutmeg, maple syrup, starbucks pumpkin spice latte, fig, sweet potato cupcake, right? It might be overkill but I’ll see what I can do. LOL. Thanks for comments everyone! xoxo, Clara

  1. I like to make pumpkin cupcakes in autumn, since I love pumpkin pie so much!

  2. to me autumn in terms of desserts means pumpkin and apple and spices like nutmeg, cloves and allspice. Think pumpkin pie or spiced cider. mmmmmm. I love this time of year.

  3. Walk in to a Yankee Candle store. You will get lots of inspiration! There are the obvious flavors like apple and pumpkin, but what about a candy corn cupcake with three layers in orange yellow and white? That would be awesome! I should make one! LOL! Or a Halloween cupcake – I’m thinking “black velvet” cake with a fun decorated top! Or you could consider doing a sweet potato cupcake…that could be good and original, too! Hope that helps!

  4. Oh, this is so easy! There are so many wonderful autumn flavors: pears, apples, pumpkin, squashes, fig (which I associate with fall), all types of spices (cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, cloves).

What immediately makes me think of fall is apple spice. I have a reed diffuser with the scent next to me on the couch that immediately puts me in that autumn state of mind.

By the way, I’m jealous of you being in California. Fall in Chicago is short-lived and is immediately followed by a super long freezing winter. I dream of living in California some day!

  5. JINGLE, Ohmygod. That candy corn idea is fabulous! I love me some candy corn! I think you should totally enter that idea for Art You Eat! Anyone can enter. Just go to the link I provided for the info! Do.it.

  6. PEARS!!!

  7. Yes, the candy corn idea is awesome. Fall is all about the dark rich colors around here. Heading into the grey & dreary winter, I love the golds, oranges, & reds that the tree leaves turn. Thankfully that shouldn’t start for at least another month here though (I hope!). Apple picking season is coming soon though, as well as pumpkins like others mentioned. Add some cinammon or other pie spices, and that is fall in MI.

  8. I LOVE fall! It’s one of the reasons I love the Northeast so much. Think about all the colors-
Deep Reds (cranberries, Apples, Pomegranates), Oranges (pumpkins, Squash), Golds (caramel, corn) and Browns ( Maple Syrup, Brown Sugar, Cinnamon). One of my favorite things about fall are Caramel apples!!!!

  9. I think of leaves and pumpkins when I think of autumn. Starbucks always brings back the pumpkin spice latte around this time of the year :-)

  10. Hi,
Pumpkin pie spice….everytime I use it my babygirl says,”Mommmy, it spells like Thanksgiving!” Autumn = thanksgiving. I’m in the Sunshine State and our weather is pretty much the same as where you’re located. At Halloween it’s still so hot it doesn’t bring to mind fall but Thanksgiving does!

  11. hey i am a california girl too with flip flops year round but i love me some pumpkin and nutmeg. go with it!!! pumpkin spice latte is already in sbucks if you can believe it. it’s still 85 out!

  12. i always equate autumn to apples, cinnamon and pumpkin. when i was younger we’d go to the orchard and pick our own, then get some hot apple cider! yum!

  13. Pumpkins, Apples, Mulled Cider and Hot Chocolate!

  14. I also live in CA, so I feel your lack-of-seasons pain. However, I like to pretend that we have a fall by baking spiced anything. Pumpkin, apple, pear, cranberry, etc. with cinnamon and nutmeg flavors. YUM!

  15. Definitely figs…

  16. Ummm… I totally just gave you a shout out. I was posting my blog on the Martha Blog and this was what I posted:

    “Hello Martha!
I would love for you to stop by my blog.
    Here is the link:

    http://honeyedhashette.blogspot.com/

I have two blogs- one is about my family and the other is all about food. I separate them because, let’s face it, most foodies are focused on one thing. Food. :)

Oh- and I think you should definitely stop by my cyber friend Clara’s blog above too. Her blog is cupcaketastic!

    Have a wonderful Wednesday!
    Janna”

  17. Great Blog! I would say Pumpkin, pears, apples, and butternut squash. I like to add a littl Chai spice to just about everything this time of year.

  18. Oh and the possibilities for a fall cuppy are endless: Pumpkin, squash, pear, apples and cinnamon, cider, nutmeg, sweet potato…

    GOOD LUCK!

  19. JANNA, No freaking way! I heart Martha and shoutouts! I am speechless (and thats an amazing feat in of itself! haha). I didn’t know you had 2 blogs? I’ll have to check our family one too!

  20. I’m with the rest of them…apple pie spice…might be a must.
Surprisingly Sweet Potato doesn’t lend much flavor…I did one for a CH Challenge, and they were whoah disappointing.

  21. I just jumped over from Martha’s Blog. I wanted to say Hi and nice Blog.
