This might be my favorite day of the year.
It’s the one place I can wear all my crazy cupcake gear and people think it’s cute instead of wanting to have me committed. Every where I turned people wanted to take my picture. It’s fun being a celebrity for the day. Although, the morning after, I’m seeing white streaks b/c of all the camera flashes now. lol
Yup, it’s that time again! I’m talking about the LA Cupcake Challenge 2012 in Hollywood. I am fortunate enough to be invited by Drink:Eat:Play (the event’s sponsor) and Dan Silberstein every year as Judge. Yes, he’s really that tall and I’m really that short.
Unfortunately last year I couldn’t make it so I was even MORE excited to go this year.
I brought my friend with me since my Husband declined my guest invitation b/c “… one year is enough for me…” HA HA! Wuss. Even though I prepared her I don’t think she REALLY understood the enormity of the event until she saw it with her own eyes. It might be one of the few times she’s been speechless and maybe a little scared.
I love this event because it’s very casual. My friend that came with me describe it almost like a wine tasting. There are various booths set up around the Renaissance hotel ballroom. After you check in at the front table you can go up to any booth, meet the bakers, sample their cupcakes, talk with other cupcake lovers and just enjoy the atmosphere. We met a couple at our table that even brought their own jug of milk! Hilarious.
(Top row: Friandise, Cake Mama’s, Cake Mama’s mini helpers, [Desi]gn Cupcakes, Sheree’s Sweets, Frosted Heaven)
I hope I didn’t make a mistake on any of the bakers above. Note to bakers: If you wear a shirt that has your cupcakery name on it it’s easier to remember you! Everyone was very sweet to take the time out of the line chaos to take a picture with me. Well… most everyone. But I’m a good girl and won’t mention names. All I’ll say is that name dropping does not a tasty cupcake make.
One of the highlights of the night was FINALLY meeting Elise of Cupcake Activist. Check out her blog in a few days. She does a MUCH BETTER recap of the cupcakes than I do. I was too busy eating!
Yikes! I have total cupcake beanie hair. I’m bummed I left my cupcake beanie in the car by the time we took a picture. It was actually on a whim that I had already left the hotel but then came back that we ran into each other. We’re cupcake friends in the blogsphere but we always seemed to miss each other every year in person. Can you believe she just had a baby?? She’s as beautiful inside as she is outside. Love her. ♥
Results will be posted on Eat:Drink:Play’s website on Tuesday. I will update with winners!
Everything was delicious! But you know how I know it was a success? My friend walked out with frosting on her arm. It had been there so long that it had crusted over. LOL
Wanna see who I voted for? I think I only gave out one or two 5/5 rating. –> CLICK HERE
A special shout out and THANK YOU to Rolling Stones Restaurant and Bar for letting us sneak in for Happy Hour at the last minute. After that 40 cupcake sugar rush, my belly needed the salt!
The double slider was to-die-for! (Not pictured b/c I ate it TOO fast!) And I could eat those garlic and parsley fries with spicy ketchup everyday!
[Insider spoiler: Dan mentioned to me that he’s not sure if there will be an LA Cupcake Challenge 2013. Super sad face. I suggest that all my IHC minions bombard his facebook page with sad faces. Ssshhhhh. You didn’t hear it from me.]
I could really go for a few more of those buffalo chicken wing cupcakes by [Desi]gn Cakes. How perfect would that cupcake be for today? I might have to see if I can recreate their recipe from memory. Until then… Here’s a recipe from Stephanie of Cupcake Project for Buffalo Chicken Wing Cupcakes for your Superbowl party.
Happy Superbowl to all my cupcake minions.
We’re a house divided. But that makes it more fun.

Now that the last mini cupcake has been devoured… I can finally post.
Yes, I ate about 30 mini cupcakes. Give or take about 5 cupcakes. No, I didn’t do it in 3 hours. Are you crazy!?!? I janked a couple boxes from various cupcake vendors and took most of them home to share with my godsons and maybe kinda sorta eat some for breakfast over the last 3 days.
But it was obvious that many ppl that were at the LA Cupcake Challenge had done this before. They were smart. They brought Tupperware. I think Glad needs to get in on that action and be a sponsor next year. Give Nesquik a little run for their money. Just saying…
I brought my husband and my little brother with me. I think they were in shock about how many ppl were there to celebrate cupcakes. I resisted the urge to say I TOLD YOU SO but it was futile. They deserved a little I told you so after mocking me all week about driving an hour away to eat cupcakes.
When you check in at the table you get a voting card. It was pretty funny that my tickets were listed under Clara Iheartcuppycakes.
The ballroom at the Renaissance Hotel was packed. People were sitting on floors b/c there weren’t enough tables and chairs.
My brother just HAD TO get a picture with the Nesquik bunny.
Of course I scoped out the bar+cocktail situation quickly.
Note to self #1: Next year bring a notepad like a good little reporter so you can write down which people were wearing what and what cupcakes they had. I’m sorry girl in the cutesy b&w striped apron.
I can’t remember what cupcakery you were representing. It was Cupcake Couture! Thanks Elise of Cupcake Activist for setting me straight.
I’m not usually a carrot cupcake person. I’m not big on veggies in cake. But these carrot cake cupcakes form Big Man Bakes were pretty darn good!
Me and Kristin of Meringue Bake Shop. Her Pretty Woman Champagne Cupcake was so FRIGGIN good. She got my vote for Best Original.
Note to self #2: I can not for the life of me remember who’s cupcake these were. If they are yours, shoot me an email or comment so I can give you proper credit. These Fall Spice Cupcakes were from Layers Cupcakes. I love the depth of field my brother got in this shot. Thanks Elise of Cupcake Activist for setting me straight on the cupcake flavor+cupcakery. That is why she was a judge, folks! I better step up my game if I wanna be a judge next year *wink*
Me and Monica of Two Parts Sugar. I thought her play on her business name and her table set up were very cute. I voted her Vanilla Throwback cupcake as Best Traditional. I’m a sucker for rainbow chip. You can read her recap on her blog (here).
Note to self #3: You need to find out where you can buy this headband. Don’t you think just wearing would make everyone around you smile? I know I was grinning when I walked by.
Oh baby! It was the holy grail of salty+sweet. The Salted Caramel Cupcake by Tavern Restaurant. Topping it with a macron is genius. I’m totally stealing that idea for my next cupcake creation. Even though it was a hard decision b/c there were so many cupcakes I loved: Key Lime by My Delight Cupcakery, Vanilla Bean Almond Cream by FairyCakes, Chocolate Vanilla Swirl by Sweet E’s… I voted The Salted Caramel as my Best Overall.
Ssshhhh… Don’t tell. But I took 2. One was for my brother. Yeah… that’s it.
Check out my cupcake bounty! At that moment I felt like I was Veruca Salt and my daddy could buy me all the cupcakes+Oompa Loompas in the world.
Fellow cupcake taste testers, Jenn of Just Jenn Recipes and Mary of Food Librarian were feeling it at the end. WUSSES! You can read Jenn’s recap (here). Mary went to the dentist for a cavity. The irony is… ironic. I think she’ll be out of commission for a few days. Poor thing.
I was hoping to get a picture with Johnny Depp b/c they were doing a promo for Alice In Wonderland at the hotel before the Cupcake Challenge event but this is about as close as I got. Shari of Bonnin Designs got even closer. She was almost able to touch him. LUCKY BITCH.
And of course I couldn’t leave Hollywood without giving some camera love to my favorite pop princess of all time. My life is now complete. Not one word out of you, Nikki. LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!
Special THANKS to my little brother for taking all the pictures while I was
stuffing my face with cupcakes schmoozing all my cupcake peeps, my Hubs for being my chauffeur to the event and the official CB cupcake box holder and Dan Silberstein for inviting me and organizing this cupcake-licious event!
I’d like to officially throw my name in the hat to be a LA Cupcake Challenge judge 2011. Who wants to be my campaign manager? I can pay in the form of little mini cupcakes. Huh… huh… Don’t leave me hanging.

I know I was suppose to tell you all about Cupcake Hero’s February ingredient today but I made the executive decision (See? I can do that b/c this is MY blog!) to postpone it until tomorrow. Nothing like a little anticipation, eh? Don’t worry!
♪♫ Tomorrow. Tomorrow. I’ll love you. Tomorrow. It’s only a day away… ♪♫
(Don’t ask me why I have Orphan Annie musical on the brain. I blame the rain.)
Instead I HAVE TO talk to you about something I’m WAY too excited about!
(Via Drink Eat Play)
I must live in a bubble. I didn’t realize they had something like this! Cupcake Camp, yes. But Cupcake Challenge, no! Until my fellow cupcake friend, Kristin from Meringue Bakeshop, asked me if I were participating this year. I think my brow furrowed and I replied, “L-A-C-U-P-C-A-K-E-C-H-A-L-L-E-N-G-E ?”
So needless to say. I’m going. I’m going to support my friend. I get no joy out of eating 100s of cupcakes. Trust me. It’s all in the name of friendship. Maybe next year when I don’t have 2 baby showers, birthday and a housewarming to bake cupcakes for, I’ll try to participate. But Oy. 1000 cupcakes are A HECK OF A LOT of cupcakes to bake. Good luck with that Kristin!
I even reschedule our housewarming party so I could go. I’m a hard core cupcake-er. Don’t mess with my frosting.
Anyone else eating or participating or both? Love to meet up.
But I’m only signing autographs from 3-4pm. No exceptions. *smirk*
EDIT #1: People!! Did you see Kristin’s comment below? 50 cupcakes. And cocktails. Included NOT extra. I-N-C-L-U-D-E-D with the admission fee. This party was made for me. But please don’t crunkcake and drive. Any of my peeps wanna rent a limo? It will be like high school prom! HA HA
EDIT #3: (Feb 9, 2010) Ugh. Found out Da Man changed the times on us little cupcake folk. I guess the story is that the hotel double booked the same ballroom so LA Cupcake Challenge event got bumped from 12noon-3pm to 4-7pm. Apparently Alice In Wonderland PR is more important than cupcakes. WHATTHEHELLMAN?!? I’m annoyed. I was looking forward to getting crunked on cupcakes+cocktails but now I’m not sure I can go. Boo FRIGGIN hoo.
